FAQ 2017-05-12T08:26:49+00:00
Do your panels work the same in the winter as in the summer? 2016-11-23T11:10:16+00:00

Our solar panels have a larger aperture area than others in the Irish market, making sure we capture every ounce of energy available. In the winter there are far fewer daylight hours available, meaning during the deep winter months you have less opportunity to capture solar energy than that of the summer months. On your short winter days, you can expect your panels to work to pre-heat your water leaving your boiler with less work to do to bring the water to the temperature needed. Think of re-boiling a kettle 20 minutes after it was first boiled, it takes less energy and time to come to boil the second time due to it being pre-heated earlier. As we say, through the year, including good and bad, long and short days, your Activ8 solar system will provide you with up to 60% of your yearly hot water needs.

Will your solar panels heat our radiators? 2016-11-23T11:04:54+00:00

Our solar panels will provide you with hot water for your domestic hot water needs. Providing anywhere up to 60% of your year round hot water needs, as per SEAI’s guidance. Although a solar thermal system can help make your entire house’s heating system more efficient, solar will not heat your radiators.

What is the cost of installing a typical Solar Thermal system? 2016-03-15T17:17:48+00:00

Solar Hot Water Systems vary in price depending on the size and complexity of the system to be installed, hot water usage, the number and type of solar collectors installed, the design of the building and location of the solar collectors.

How long will installation take? 2016-03-15T17:17:05+00:00

The majority of typical installations take just one day, but this can stretch to two days depending on inclement weather. Work will take place both inside and outside the property in this time with the installation of the panels onto your roof, and also the installation of a pump station, hot water cylinder and appropriate pipe work. In the event that work is delayed due to inclement weather, we will endeavour to keep to our schedule where possible but will keep you informed of any changes.

Does the installation cause much of a mess? 2016-03-15T17:15:14+00:00

No, dust sheets are used throughout the house to minimize any dust or debris, and our technicians will thoroughly clear up before they leave. Better still, we pioneered the one-day install so we’ll be in and out in just one day!

Is it suitable for my home? 2016-03-15T17:13:55+00:00

Solar Hot Water systems can be installed on the majority of buildings; however we would need to carry out a site survey in order to confirm whether an installation is feasible. Our Solar collectors can be installed on pitched roofs, flat roofs, A-frames on the ground, even wall mounted! All installations are subject to survey, so there is no need to worry, our surveyors and engineers will explain everything to you.

Are there any maintenance or service requirements? 2016-03-15T17:11:47+00:00

Very little. A regular visual check is advisable ensuring that the panels are kept relatively clean and that shade from trees or other obstructions has not become a problem.
We would also advise that the integrity of the glycol in the heat transfer medium be checked and tested for its acidity level every few years. Activ8 Solar Energies are able to provide this service if required, further details are available on request about our servicing options and plans.

Do I need to provide anything? 2016-03-15T17:10:13+00:00

No, however we do ask that you are present at the property throughout the installation and for the hand over once the installation is complete.

What is a solar thermal system? 2017-05-12T08:27:04+00:00

blog_5Solar Hot Water Heating systems (also known as Solar Thermal) collect light radiation and convert it to heat through flat plate solar panels on your roof.

The heat is then transferred to the hot water cylinder thereby heating the domestic hot water within the cylinder, to be used all around your home.

Even on cloudy days there is light radiation from the sun, so the solar panels will receive light radiation each day, the resulting heat in the hot water cylinder is determined only by the amount of light collected that day.

How reliable are solar systems? 2016-03-15T15:58:14+00:00

It is as reliable as the rise of the sun every morning. Solar technology has been around for a while now, and since then it’s being improved to become more safe, reliable and

What are the benefits of solar hot water? 2017-05-12T08:27:04+00:00

In-roof solar thermal panelsA Solar Hot Water system is one of the most cost effective and environmentally friendly renewable energy resources available.

In the summer months, a Solar Hot Water system can actually provide almost all of your hot water needs and around 50% for the rest of the year. This averages out to around 60-70% of the year round domestic hot water requirement produced by FREE solar energy.

Not only does a Solar Hot Water system save you money, it also reduces your impact on the environment. A typical domestic system can reduce carbon emissions by around half a ton per year. This has become particularly relevant with the introduction of Carbon Tax.

How can I get the best out of my system? 2016-03-15T16:35:24+00:00

The technicians will optimise the operation of the Solar Hot Water system during the commissioning process. In order to obtain maximum benefit from a Solar Hot Water system, continue using your domestic hot water as you would do normally. The technicians will explain how to get the most from your solar water heating system during the hand over procedure.

Do I need planning permission? 2016-03-15T16:37:05+00:00

The installation of Solar Collectors is allowed, without additional permission, as a ‘Permitted Development’ on most homes.
Listed buildings or properties located within a conservation area may require additional details to be supplied to the local authority in order for them to give consent for the installation. We will be happy to help obtain additional permission should it be required.

Do I need to do anything before installation? 2016-03-15T17:08:46+00:00

Yes, we recommend that your hot press is emptied of towels, clothes, etc and that there is clear access within the roof space to allow our installers to carry out the installation efficiently and safely.
